Irvin Clack, Montezuma barber, was being held in the county jail today charged with the murder of R. L. Britt, local shoe shop and pressing club operator, who died yesterday shortly before 1 o'clock after having been shot twice by bullets from Clack's revolver. Clack confessed the shooting to Chief of Police R. R. Beeland and Sheriff W. T. Jolly, but claimed self-defense. He was quoted by officers as saying that the victim cursed him and made an effort to draw a knife when Clack reached for his gun and shot twice. Both shots struck Britt, one entering his chest on the right side and the other striking the fingers and thumb on his right hand. The shooting took place in Britt's place of business just before 1 o'clock Wednesday. Clack had walked into the shop and asked for Mr. Britt and within a few minutes the revolver was fired twice in succession. The victim staggered out the front door and fell in the streets. He died within a few minutes. Mrs. Britt was in the shop at the time but the incident occurred so quickly she did not realize what had happened. According to the officers, it was reported to them that Clack owed Britt a 35 cent bill and request for payment had been made earlier in the day. Clack went to the shoe shop while the victim was out for lunch, but returned a short time later and found Britt at work and then the shooting occurred. Mr. Britt is survived by his wife, two sons, and three daughters. Funeral srvices will be held this afternoon at Red Hill Church and interment will be in the Red Hill Cemetery.
