Notes for: Jesse Bradford Long
Information extracted from research prepard by Mrs. Oscar L. Long of Macon, Georgia, a copy of which is in the possession of Delores Boyer-Smith.
Jesse Bradford Long, born 1808, married Betsy Whittington, dauther of
Cornelius and Rebecca Gilliam Whittington. They continued to live in Crawford
County on a farm, only a short distance from James Long. The census record
gives his occupation as a planter (farmer), but he also operated a pottery;
according to his great grandson, Jasper Newton Long. Jasper wrote several
letters around 1965 to Mrs. Roy Darron, San Diego, California. She is a great
granddaughter of Jesse. He stated that at one time, there were 18 potteries
in Crawford County, and that the pottery of Jesse was operated for several
generations by sons and grandsons of Jesse. Mrs. Darron said that her
grandmother told them that Jesse Bradford manufactured crockery items used in
Confederate hospitals during the Civil War. There is today a pottery on the
same site operated by someone named Merritt.
Jesse Bradford Long died in Texas while on a visit to daughters Angeline
Harper and Georgiana Dean. This was in the 1880's according to Mrs. Darron,
granddaughter of Angeline Harper.
