Notes for: Henry Newton Britt

Even though born in December 1830, Henry is first located in Crawford County, Georgia on the 1850 census. He and his new wife, Elizabeth are residing in the home of Sanders and Catherine Bond. Research so far, indicates that Catherine is Elizabeth's older sister (Catherine "Kitty" Miller-Bond). It is not known how long Henry and Elizabeth lived with the Bonds; however Henry purchased 101-1/4 acres of land in the 2nd district of Crawford County, in October 1851, from Robert Elliott. In July 1852, he purchased 100 acres from his father-in-law Mason Miller. Kinchen L. Britt in 1858 deeded (in-trust), land to Henry, to be used for Kinchen's mother Ava Hortman. See warranty deed Kinchen L. Britt (in trust) to Henry N. Britt, Crawford County, Georgia; Deed Book "G", page 339. A transcribed and photo copy is maintained by Rozine Britt-Sheets. Henry's middle name of Newton, was recently discovered from information on his son William Henry Britt Sr.'s death certificate (provided by his g-g-grandaughter Connie Britt-Nixon. Henry's place of birth on son William's death certificate, is unknown. His place of birth is listed as Jones County, Georgia, on son Lewis' death certificate (copy maintained by g-grandaughter Rozine Britt-Sheets). The information was provided by grandson Elisha Henry (E. H. Britt Sr.) E. H. was born two months after his grandfather's death; so he did not have first-hand knowledge of his grandfather's history; so Henry's place of birth of Jones County may not be correct. Still, E. H. must have had a reason, to believe his grandfather hailed from Jones County. Henry's tombstone has the following inscription: "Remember children as you pass by, As you are now, once was I, As I am now, you must be, Prepare yourself for Eternity"
