Notes for: Frances Elizabeth Hortman
Based upon available census information, it appears the DOB for Frances on her tombstone is not correct. The original marker is broken, and a newer marker was placed by grandson Van Cecil Britt in the year 2000. He obtained his information from available census and other Hortman family researchers. Census Information: 1860, 12 years old (b:1848); 1870, 21 and 22 years old (two locations) (b:1849/1848); 1880, 33 years old (b: 1847); 1900, 51 years old (b: Dec 1848); 1910, 62 years old (b: 1848); 1920, 72 years old (b: 1848).
It is indicated on the 1910 census, that both John and Francis were married twice. An earlier marriage record for Francis has not been located as of 11/8/2000; however John was married by record to Francis H. Rowell. Frances is listed twice on the 1870 census with Thomas Rowell, and son Rufus (see 1870 cenus event notes). It is indicated on the 1910 census that Francis birthed 8 children, 6 still living at census time. It is indicated on the 1900 census she had birthed 10 children, 6 still living. Between both marriages, seven children have been identified. On the 1880 census, Frances is married to John Britt, her son Rufus Rowell is not listed in the Britt home, so it is assumed he died prior to 1880.
