Notes for: Obediah D. Britt
Confederate States Army: Private, Enlisted May 3, 1862, Co. A, 54th Ga Vols. Roll dated February 29, 1864, last on file, shows him present. Pension records indicate he was retired from the service in April 1865, after the surrender of General Jos. E. Johnston at Greensboro North Carolina. We have identified from this record, Wife Sarah, and two children Charles b: abt 1866, and Thomas b: abt 1868. On his pension application, O.D.'s wife is listed as Lou Hutchison, and he stated he had two daughters ages 6 & 19, and two sons ages 10 & 16. He also mentioned that his two "grown" children had taken care of him, but were no longer able to. This indicates to us, he had 6 children. The marriage confirmation affidavit (part of Lou's pension application) states she and O. D. were married around February 15, 1880. This indicates that Lou and the 4 minor children listed on the application are a result of a second marriage. A telephone conversation between Rozine Britt-Sheets, Jami DuFour, and Christine Britt-Ryles (September 21, 2001), brought out that decendants of Obediah were unaware of his second marriage. They were aware of the children; however, thought them to be children of O. D. and Sara, not O. D. and Lou. Because the DOB of four children is not clear (based upon O.D.'s pension application), two girls and two boys are linked on this family sheet to O. D. and Lou. Actual dates of birth have been obtained from decendants of O.D. for some of the children; however they do conflict with the ages stated in the pension record and available census information. It was also mentioned, that there is no known divorce record for O. D. and Sarah.
